The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is undertaking an enterprise-wide Accessibility initiative to ensure compliance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1 AA) standards. This role will focus on defining, documenting, and implementing accessibility and mobile-friendly standards across 300+ custom applications developed within a Microsoft .NET environment.
The UI/UX Designer II will lead efforts to ensure public-facing and internal applications meet accessibility, usability, and mobility requirements, including compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and **Section 508 standards. The position works closely with Application Development Supervisors, the DNR Application Architect Lead, and Web Services teams to define standards, implement testing strategies, and ensure long-term compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and document UI/UX standards, processes, and guidance for .NET custom applications, ensuring WCAG 2.1 AA compliance.
- Conduct accessibility reviews and testing of existing and new applications using approved tools.
- Create and maintain templates, wireframes, and mockups to support accessible and mobile-friendly design.
- Develop minimal but effective accessibility and mobility test scenarios for use in SDLC processes.
- Collaborate with development teams to ensure compliance across browsers, platforms, and devices.
- Maintain inventory of accessibility findings and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Define ongoing compliance monitoring processes and accessibility metrics.
- Provide accessibility consultation and testing guidance to development teams.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies and manage tasks within Azure DevOps.
- Conduct presentations and communicate new standards across DNR teams.
- Analyze legislative and policy changes impacting accessibility requirements.
- Ensure deliverables align with DNR branding, security, and federal/state compliance requirements.
Required Skillsets
- 7+ years advanced experience designing accessible, mobile-friendly web applications meeting WCAG 2.1 AA standards.
- Strong front-end expertise in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and Angular.
- 2+ years experience documenting and implementing organizational accessibility and usability standards.
- 4+ years hands-on experience using accessibility testing tools such as Lighthouse, Axe DevTools, NVDA, ARIA, JAWS, ANDI.
- Proficiency in design tools such as Adobe XD and Figma (wireframes, user flows, prototypes).
- Advanced experience testing across browsers, devices, and platforms.
- Experience working in a Microsoft .NET environment (ASP.NET, MVC, C#).
- Knowledge of universal design principles.
- Experience with SDLC, IT best practices, and Agile/Scrum methodologies.
- Strong troubleshooting and UX research skills.
- Excellent documentation, presentation, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within government agencies.
- Familiarity with Microsoft tools (SharePoint, Teams, Visio, Excel, etc.).
- UX certifications in accessibility or inclusive design.
- Experience with data metrics, persona development, and user research.
