Description:
This position within the Validation and Verification team of Client IC&S will support product development at the Peoria Proving Grounds by testing engine software, electrical systems, prototype and pilot hardware, and engine-to-machine interactions. You will serve as an individual contributor executing validation activities that support and enhance Client’s product performance, durability, reliability, quality, and serviceability. This role will be responsible for performing on-machine engine software and validation activities for both New Product Introduction development and current product enhancements/Continuous Product Improvement resolution.
Client’s energy applications are electronically controlled to meet regulations, improve performance, enhance product uptime, and simplify field troubleshooting. As such, engine software has numerous complex strategies that manage operating conditions and provide valuable data to service technicians, owners, regulatory organizations, and Client. As a validation engineer, you will ensure that software and hardware perform as expected, per specification, in all operating conditions.
In this role, you will learn the critical subsystems and operating conditions for energy applications, the intricacies of embedded systems and hardware, and how to identify corner-of-the-box conditions. You will then apply this knowledge to ensure defect-free delivery of energy application software and hardware, which is what Client’s customers have come to expect.
Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the engine application systems team and several process partners (engine platform teams, machine product groups, product support) to perform engine software checkouts/validation for IPSD-M/IPSD-L/LPSD and provide machine testing/system troubleshooting/engine rework support to BCP and Client Paving.
- Plan and execute testing of electronic and software systems prior to the delivery of software to the engine factory or updates to the field. Validate that new products and updated products meet engineering requirements.
- Apply knowledge of engines, electrical systems, and mechanical systems to troubleshoot malfunctioning components and systems for machine engines.
- Collaborate in cross-functional global teams that include other engineers, technologists, mechanics, instrumentation technicians, operators, and logisticians in a collaborative team environment to complete complex tasks safely, with the highest quality, while meeting project schedules and budgets.
- Learn the fundamentals of machine equipment operation through on-the-job training.
- Verification/Validation Engineers in this role are fully engaged in both electrical and mechanical systems activity through a technical awareness of the components, systems, and software they test.
- Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills.
- Analyze test results and summarize conclusions.
- Communicate and track product development issues.
- Communicate technical information to team members and other business units.
- Demonstrate hands-on mechanical experience, familiarity, and comfort with engine disassembly and assembly.
- Demonstrate hands-on electrical/electronic system troubleshooting expertise.
- Requires deep-rooted diesel engine technical and systems expertise and experience.
- Routinely work in challenging environmental conditions, including heat, humidity, extreme cold, and dust.
Technical Skills Required:
- 3+ years of experience in engine system integration, and/or A&I or product support field experience.
- Hands-on mechanical experience, familiarity, and comfort with engine disassembly and assembly.
- Hands-on electrical/electronic system troubleshooting expertise.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, manage change, and communicate effectively. Demonstrated capability and passion for software testing, troubleshooting, mechanical repair, and problem resolution.
- Willingness to routinely work in challenging environmental conditions, including heat, humidity, extreme cold, and dust.
Top Candidates Will Also Have:
- In-depth knowledge of engine and engine aftertreatment system components and control strategies (e.g., DPF and SCR components, common rail fuel injection, and EGR systems).
- Demonstrated expertise in operation and fault modes of electronic sensors, actuators & other inductive loads, classic controls methods (e.g., PID), communication networks (e.g., J1939/CAN/Ethernet), test automation, and instrumentation & data collection tools.
- Experience in product development, engine performance/platform experience, machinery and equipment, vehicle testing, or mechanical components and systems.
- Strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to build positive working relationships across global cultures with coworkers.
- An eye for detail and ability to spot emerging issues or failures in components and systems.
- Self-starter with strong computer skills with the ability to multitask different software applications simultaneously to optimize and deliver desired results under challenging requirements.
Desired Skills:
- Experience with SuperComm 2, Cadet, CAT Electronic Technician (CAT ET), CANape, and electrical system troubleshooting is highly desired.
Education & Experience Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other accredited engineering curriculum.
- Willing to take Associates with 7+ years’ experience.
- Open to Master’s Degree.
- 4+ years of engineering experience. Short-term internships will not be considered.
